Third Day Begins

Day 3 begins with Bobby on drums as the recording of “From Austin to Abbey Road” gets fully underway.  Slight glitch with the instrument rentals – they took back the Höfner bass! Actually, they took everything back, which is fine for everything… except the Höfner bass.

Day 3 is also Robert’s birthday, with a bonus strange sensation of being in a country that couldn’t care less that today is July 4.  It’s one thing when “we” don’t care beyond the day off work and outdoor grilling and fireworks.  It’s rather more strange when you have to explain to people what’s so special about the date.

Second day at Abbey Road – Austin to Abbey Road

Ed laid down a drum track for the uber-collaborative “Austin to Abbey Road.” Kaye, Alan, Bobby, Veg, and Ed each get a verse telling the tale of the gang starting with an idea and ending up at Abbey Road.

Second day at Abbey Road – Let It Go and Burnout Revolution

Ed added some piano to “Let It Go”.  He tried the Hammond B3 (as in the same one used to record “Whiter Shade of Pale”!), but that didn’t have the right feel for the song.

“Burnout Revolution” was partly done at Austin’s 5AM Studios, so Ed added vocal tracks over the rhythm track from the Austin sessions. He doubled himself but hasn’t decided yet if the doubling is going to stick around.

We all filed onto the Studio 2 stairs to become a human drum machine for “Burnout Revolution” – stomping and clapping like crazed, confused, but mostly in-time cheerleaders.

Veg added some BBKing-style riffs to “Never Get the Blues” as we head toward the end of the night.

Second day at Abbey Road – Girl at the Sidewalk Cafe

Veg’s tune about the unrequited love of a waitress at a sidewalk cafe.  Veg sings and plays guitar.  Just before dinner, Cy added egg shaker.

Second day at Abbey Road – Send the Letter

Bobby’s heart-wrenching tune about a family getting a letter no family ever wants.  Bobby’s singing and playing guitar, Kaye’s on bass, and Veg is drumming.  Alan put down a vocal track, too.
